October is College Awareness Month!

The following are current happenings for October 2015 at the College Center:

1.     The month of October is College Awareness Month! Many activities and presentations are scheduled throughout the month details will be forthcoming. Starting next week, we are asking that students and staff wear their college gear every Thursday during the month of October. Show your spirit and provide our students with information about your alma mater.

2.     The College Center is continuing to register seniors for the SAT and ACT Exams.  Students can register anytime during the school day with a pass to the College Center.  Juniors will take the ACT and SAT for the first time in May and June of 2016. December is the deadline for most universities to accept ACT and SAT scores. Encourage seniors to test by November to not miss any deadlines.

3.     Many admissions representatives from various universities are scheduled to present this month to our students.  I have attached the College Center Calendar so that you can share this information with your students. Many private universities count attendance at these presentations as displayed interest and use this in their selection process. Passes to attend university presentations are available in the College Center. All grade levels are encouraged to attend.

4.     East Los Angeles College Courses are up and running and registration is now closed. Criminal Justice 1 takes place every Wednesday from 3:00 pm to 6:10 pm in room 132 and Child Development 1 takes place every Wednesday in room 217 at the same time. Both courses are transferable to the CSU and UC Systems.

5.     All 10th and 11th grade students will take the revised PSAT/NMSQT on October 14, 2015. Homeroom teachers, thank you in advance for assisting with the administration of this exam.  An in-service is forthcoming for all proctors. Familiarity with the PSAT exam structure will improve scores when the SAT is taken during their Junior and Senior year.  Therefore, exposure will increase the likelihood of students applying to four year universities.

6.     College Prep Mondays-The College Center will continue to be open every Monday after school until 5:00 to assist students with everything related to college admissions. Encourage them to take advantage of this opportunity without having to miss class time. Snacks will be provided!

Thank you all for continuing to improve the college going culture at Bell High School.
